About Us

Legitimo allows you to make simple contracts on your phone in under 1 minute, in English or Spanish. All you have to do is answer a few easy questions and your contract is automatically generated. Sign right on your phone and send it to the other person via email or text message for review. Legitimo also translates contracts to other languages, enabling people that don’t speak the same language to negotiate transactions frictionlessly.

Legitimo was founded at the LATISM NYC 2013 Hackathon by lawyers, developers, designers, and marketers interested in social sustainability and increasing access to justice. We believe everyone has the right to legal protection, regardless of national origin or economic status, and hope Legitimo will give you full confidence in your everyday dealings. Please let us know how we can improve Legitimo by providing feedback. We love to hear from users!

Is this Legit?

Yes! Contrary to popular belief, contracts don’t have to be fancy. In fact, it’s better when they’re clear, concise, and easy to understand. A simple contract in plain English (or Spanish) is just as good as those overpriced lawyerly ones.

Do I have to pay anything?

No, Legítimo is 100% free! We believe everyone deserves access to free legal protection, regardless of how much money they have in the bank.

Do I really need Legítimo?

Legítimo gives you free legal protection. Without a written contract, scammers can change their story and make it hard for you to get what you deserve.

Imagine, you buy a “new” bike from your neighbor that you think is in good condition. One week later, while riding through the park, the bike falls apart on you! When you confront your neighbor and demand a refund, he changes the facts and tells you that he made it clear during the deal that the bike was used. Without a written agreement, it’s hard to prove what the real story is. However, with Legítimo, you can quickly lay out the deal on your phone. People will think twice before scamming you and you can have complete confidence in your transactions.

What can I do if someone breaks the contract?

Despite these protections, some people might still break your contract. If talking to the person doesn’t work, you might want to consider suing them in court. In court, the judge will want to see evidence of what was agreed upon in the beginning. But where will you find that type of evidence? O wait! You have Legítimo. A Legítimo contract can serve as written proof of what was suppose to happen, which can help you win your case and get what you deserve. Without Legítimo, you run the risk of battling it out in a Judge Judy type he-said, she-said case. Avoid the mess and stay protected with Legítimo.

Do I need to print the contract?

No. Contracts do not have to be printed to be enforceable. As long as both parties agree to the terms, it’s legit. Reference any contracts you made in your “History” section.

Can I be forced to sign a contract?

Although someone can force you to sign a contract, that contract is usually NOT enforceable. In order for a contract to be valid, both parties must agree to the terms of the deal on their own. If you’re forced, you clearly didn’t agree on your own. Vice versa, don’t force other people to sign a contract either.

Is there an age requirement to sign a contract?

Yes, in the United States a minor lacks the legal capacity to make a contract. In most states, a minor is defined as a person under the age of 18. Therefore, if someone under the age of 18 signs a contract, that contract might be invalid. However, there are exceptions to this rule including emancipated minors, situations where the minor went through great length to appear as an adult, or if the minor becomes an adult during the course of fulfilling the contract.
